Decalcifying agent - what IS this really?!
« on: May 08, 2010, 05:41:49 PM »
A store here in Denmark sells a decalcifying agent for washing machines - they claim that it's pure "Hexaphosphate".
Do you guys have any idea what it is? The only thing I can find on Google is Inositol Hexaphophate, which seems to have nothing to do with decalcification.

It's not for any special reason though, it just got me interested when they claimed pure Hexaphosphate ;D

Actually inisotol hexaphosphate has a lot to do with decalcification. The oxygens on the phosphorus bind very tightly to the calcium and cause it to precipitate (calcium phosphate is what your bones are made from). This will decalcify things by taking out all the soluble calcium.
