cleaners for alcohol bottling pipes
« on: May 28, 2010, 10:41:29 AM »
Hello,

I am new here and I have a question. Usually alcohol bottling pipes after bottling are cleaned with pure alcohol. Is there other possible methods to clean them (not using pure alcohol)?

I imagine PURE alcohol is used for its rapid evaporation and the fact it leaves no trace, so most likely not

any good disinfectant will do. Just don't use bleach.

If you're asking because you're having trouble getting pure ethanol, then just use some 99% isopropanol. I've seen 99% at a few pharmacies. It's rare, but not impossible to find.  Rinse well.

The idea  of using other cleaner than pure ethanol is this: with one alcohol bottling line it is possible  to bottle several products, like brandy, flavoured vodka, biter. For example when brandy is bottled you have to wash bottling line pipes with pure ethanol. If you do not do that, the trase of brandy will be in other bottled product - and it is not good.

Is isopropanol siutable for this? It has very strong odor. Will it not leave any trase in bottled alcohol beverages?

most likely not as long as it is thoroughly dried. I think they want you to use ethanol because it is food safe. That way there is no risks of any contamination if it is not thoroughly dried

I am not sure if I want isopropanol in my drinks. I prefer to intoxicate myself with just ethanol.
