solvent for lysine to use carbodiimide
« on: July 22, 2010, 11:58:04 PM »
Hi friends
I need to polymerize lysine by DCC/HOBt. The problem is the solvent. The only solvent that I found is water but DCC/HOBt doesnt work with water. Can somebod by y help me with options to polymerize lysine in organic solvents by using carbodiimide or another kind of suggetions.
Thank you, I am really stuck in this reaction. Please , *delete me*!

Are you just planning to react lysine with DCC and HOBt? If so, you'll have a heck of a time getting any selectivity. Lysine has two amino groups, one of which needs to be protected if you want to get a single chain polymer.

Anywho, I'm not familiar with the specific reaction but the DCC/HOBt coupling has always worked for me in DMF.
