Gunk in distillation tubes
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:10:02 AM »

There's some sort of yellowish/brownish/greenish gunk inside the thick plastic/rubber tubes attached to my condenser inside my fume hood (which uses only very pure distilled water), what could this stuff be?

Maybe something evaporated inside my fume hood and passed into the plastic/rubber tubing?

I forgot to mention, it's silicone tubing.

Algae? I know we have the 'issue' of alge in our silicone rubber water pipes (we use ta water though), though i guess as long as its not *in* the condensor, it wouldn't really be a problem.

Yeah its probably mold or algae.  If you dont like it, change the tubing.  If not, its harmless.  You would be amazed at the conditions life can grow in.  My personal favorite was large quantities of mold in a 1M Na2SO4 aqueous solution that was about a year old.
