Diphenylsulfone and Nucleophilicity
« on: June 18, 2010, 01:58:34 AM »
Hi, everyone

This question is about nucleophilic reaction.

Is it possible for diphenylsufone to react with nucleophilic agent such as -O-?

And, why is it possible or not?

I don't know if I'm right, but a first glance at the structure of diphenylsulfone suggests that it would be quite hard for a nucleophile to approach the sulfur center. This is because two delocalised pi-electron clouds(the benzene molecules) surround it, and hence there would be quite some repulsion to any nucleophile trying to approach it.
