Why is 2,4-dinitrotoluene a major product...

Why is 2,4 dinitrotoluene a major product when a second nitro group is added to p-nitrotoluene???

The methyl group on the toluene is an ortho-para activator so in electrophilic aromatic substitution, new groups will be directed towards either the ortho or para positions. Nitro is a meta director.

The effects of the nitro and methyl group stack directing further nitro groups to the 2 spot.
