Reaction kinetics - graphically finding order of reaction
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:25:47 AM »
Hi

So i'm doing a prac on 'kinetics for the reaction of IO3- and HSO3-'
Basically we recorded the reaction time for a range of different concentrations of one of IO3- and a fixed
concentration of HSO3-.

The question i'm having trouble with says to plot a graph of log (1/time) versus log (volume IO3-)
and then to find the order of reaction with respect to [IO3-] from the graph

I've attached the graph but I don't understand how a graph of log (1/time) versus log (volume IO3-) can
show the order of reaction and can't find anything about it on the net.

Thanks  :)

1. What is the balanced ionic equation?

2. What could the rate equation be for such a reaction, with unknown powers?

3. What happens if you take logs of both sides of the rate equation?

4. When you do the plot how can you use gradients and intercepts to find powers and multiples of the rate equation in (2) ?

5. What are the common names for the ions IO3- and HSO3- (please use sub and sup button when posting on forming to improve readability of your posts)

How do you know the reaction has completed?

At what point do you measure "time" for this reaction?

Look up iodine clock reaction (iodate version)
