Homework help-pH problem..seem my work please!
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:34:02 AM »
Suppose that 0.500L of .0200M HCl is mixed with 0.100L of 0.100M Ba (OH)2. What is the ph of the final
solution after neutralization has occured??

i cancelled out the Cl and Ba since they are spectator ions, leaving me with

H  +       2OH   -->    H3O
0.200     0.100          O

pH = -log (0.200) = 0.69

this is not the answer since the choices i have are: 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 for pH

what am i doing wrong and how can i get the correct answer?
im notorious for making stupid mistakes and overanalyzing simple things....i dont want to make the same
mistake for my exams :(

Write down a balanced reaction first. Then do its stoichiometry.

Just missing letter corrected

AWK's advice applies to basically every chemistry equation.

Always write your balanced equation first.
