Friedel-Crafts Alkylation of Aniline
« on: August 23, 2010, 05:27:45 PM »
This is straight out of my final exam solutions:

Is this a mistake? Why wouldn't aniline undergo Friedel-Crafts alkylation? Isn't NH2 a great O/P director?

The answer is correct.  You are also correct, amines are very good ortho/para directors.  But what is the role of the AlCl3?  Why would this particular substrate be a problem?
