Can someone explain this to me? New Chem student
« on: September 21, 2010, 01:42:48 PM »
A chemist has samples of 2 compounds(ClXa and ClXb), each contain Cl and the element X. She then determines that the ratio of mass X to mass CL.  = 0.5359 for the ClXa and 1.6077 for the Clxb sample. Identify the mystery element "X".
I see that my it should be ClX1 and ClX3  just from simple division, but how do I figure waht element X is?

MX:MCl=0.5359 or 3MX:MCl=1.6077
You know MCl from a Periodic table
What is MX
