E and H
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:57:34 PM »
Sorry, but I have another one of these H=E+P :delta: V questions

For which exothermic reaction is  :delta: E more negative than  :delta: H?
A) Br2(l)  :rarrow: Br2(g)
B) 2C(s) + O2(g)  :rarrow: 2CO(g)
C) H2(g) + F2(g)  :rarrow: 2HF(g)
D) 2SO2 + O2(g)  :rarrow: 2SO2(g)

My logic is that, if H=E+P :delta: V, and you want :delta: E < :delta: H, then you have :delta: E < :delta: E + P :delta: V and so 0 < P :delta: V. Since P is always positive, then the change in volume must also be positive, and the moles of gas products must be more than the moles of reactants. However, the answer is D, which is just the opposite. Where did I go wrong?

Sorry to revive this, but does anyone know what was wrong with what I did?
