enol forms of phenylacetone?
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:11:38 AM »
hi,
would like to know about the structures of the two different enols of phenylacetone.
came across this question in L.G. Wade organic textbook (chapter:condensations and alpha substitutions of carbonyl compounds).
cannot seem to get it right.
any help will be appreciated

Best Regards,
jalal

What, for instance are the enol form(s) of acetone itself?

You've drawn the enol from acetophenone. Acetophenone is not the same as phenylacetone.
My research: Google Scholar and Researchgate

right. you are right. this solves the question.
actually, am not that used to acetate naming. more used to phenyl propanone way of naming.
Learning the carbonyl reactions which pass through enolate formation and started doing the exercise in the book. thought the problem was in my concept and did not check the structure.

thanks a lot,
all the best
