the dichloromethane extracts were washed with sodium carbonate and sodium bisulphite, idk why we did that?

You may used some acids in your reaction,so the sodium carbonate was used to neutralize the acid as a base .
As to the sodium bisulphite was used to removed the oxygenant as a reducing agent.
