Write balanced equation with ions?
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:33:04 AM »
Hi, I'm asked:

Bleach is made by reacting chlorine with sodium hydroxide. Write a balanced equation for the reaction of chlorine gas with hydroxide ion to produce hypochlorite and chloride ions.

I've written it down to my best knowledge but it seems a bit too simple?

Cl2 (g) + 2OH- (aq)  :rarrow: ClO- (aq) + Cl- (aq) + H2O (l)

Is there something more to it? Any clarification would be nice :)
