structure of carbon is basically given as that of diamond or graphite
what then of the structure of soot or coke?

Hi JzalkMry!
Soot is not actually an amorphous graphite, at least if to trust wikipedia (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amorphous_carbon
). It differs in a way that it contains considerable amounts of other elements, especially hydrogen. The point is that soot sonsists to considerable degree of policyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycyclic_aromatic_hydrocarbons
) and is very similar to a coal, while amorphous carbon is a pure form of carbon that doesn't have any crystallic form in compare with graphite and diamont.
