IUPAC Naming for Ketone/Aldehyde
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:17:40 PM »
Hello there, I have a naming problem I don't quite understand. I believe it has properties of both Ketone & Aldehyde, so I am not sure how to name it.

My best guess was 4-methyl-1,4-pentanone. The two double bonds of Oxygen are really throwing me off. Any advice? Thank you!

Name it as an aldehyde since aldehydes have (slightly) higher priority on IUPAC's scale. See this handout: http://www.lavcchem212.com/files/FGPR.PDF
