Weight/Weight Need help
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:20:04 PM »
So for my organic lab we took 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-methyl-2-propyl, and 1-pentanol and we took the solubility for each of these. For part A of the experiment we had the water in a beaker then added a drop of water to it till there was 2 separate layers and recorded how many drops. Then we heated it for a minute and added extra drops of water if needed. For part B we just flipped the experiment having the water in a beaker and adding the alcohol after. Now this is where I am confused. For the homework we were asked to find the weight % which I know by now = Mass Solute/Mass Solution x 100. However I'm blanking out when it comes to this simple equation. My professor told me to use the density of each of the alcohols but this hint did not point me in the right direction. I have the total number of drops, the density, and mL of each used. Seeing that 1 drop = 50uL (microliters) I figured out each of the mL's for each of the alcohols. Now what? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm sitting the library waiting for someone with an answer. Thanks.

Typical units for density are g/mL if that helps.  From there you should be able to work with the molecular weight of each alcohol.
