DRAWING STRUCTURES?
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:46:20 AM »
How do I draw structures and give the IUPAC name of the constitutional isomers the aldehydes with molecular formula C6H12O.

Would the structures look like this:

1. C=C-C-C-C-C-OH =hexanolaldehydes?

2. C=C-C-C-C-C =hexanol-2-aldehydes?
                  l
                 OH

3. C=C-C-C-C-C = hexanol-3-aldehydes?
               l
              OH

4. C=C-C-C-C-C
            l
           OH

5. C=C-C-C-C-C
         l
        OH

6. C=C-C-C-C-C
     l
    OH

           CH3
            l
7. H3C-CH-CH-CHO
                      l
                      CH3

Only structures like 7 are still aldehydes, are you sure that's all you need, as opposed to unsaturated alcohols, ethers etc?

Well, if you're asked to draw out all the aldehydes with formula C6H12O, and you draw things that aren't aldehydes, then that seems wrong to me. There are other aldehydes you can draw, though. 7 is not the only extra one.
