Cation in a Deep-Red Colored Solution
« on: November 14, 2010, 02:45:54 PM »
A solution forms a precipitate upon addition of NaOH solution. When the precipitate is dissolved in HCl and treated with KCNS solution, a deep-red color is observed. The original solution probably contained the cation

A) Fe2+
B) Cr3+
C) Fe3+
D) Mn2+

I know that FeSCN2+ is probably in the deep-red colored solution, but would this come from the Fe3+ then, since the SCN- has a -1 charge? Why is the answer A?
