Hello there! In my classroom, i´ve been thinking about clorine acid production. So, i tried to propose a way to do this with simple equipaments:



I know that the simple contact of gases is not sufficient to form the clorine acid. So, i think about doing this with pressure.
The way i found to apply pressure, is using a thin exit to the gas in the third flask. With that, here is my question: will it work? If no, why?

Ah, i will use a red cabbage solution in the third flask to verify the HCl production =)
And the additional hidrogen from the second flask is to elevate the reagent´s concentration, to influency the product formation:

H2(g)+ Cl2(g)  :rarrow: 2 HCl(aq)

Reaction between hydrogen and chlorine is explosive, so it is not that easy to control it. Also, what you will get from the electrolysis will be a mixture of chlorine and oxygen - which again means you will have an explosive mixture of oxygen and hydrogen. Looks risky (I wouldn't try), but the chemistry behind is more or less correct and you could get some traces of HCl.

Hmm... my teacher tell me about the explosion possibility too. So, i think about using a small amount of the reagents to prevent the explosion. Anyway, this is not a way to produce large amounts of HCl  :'(

the explosion you are worried about is generally initiated by blue light if I remember correctly.

But concentrated sulfuric acid on sodium chloride is a much easier way to get large amounts of HCL GAS.. but the rate with which the gas is expelled from the reaction may be overwhelming so precautions should be taken.
