Hi guys, currently doing an assignment, having trouble with creating a balanced equation for a redox reaction.
Copper (II) Nitrate Hyrdrate was dissolved in ethanol and triphenylphosphine was added and warmed. When dissolved and reacted the solution was allowed to recrystallize for a week and then filtered.
So far i've managed to get
Cu(NO3)2.xH2O + 2PPh3 = NO3Cu (PPh3)2 + xH20 + NO3-
So that's copper nitrate hydrate + triphenylphospine. Another possibility would be:
Cu(NO3)2.xH2O + 2PPh3 = NO3Cu (PPh3)2 + NO2 + xH2O + ½O2
I'm just not entirely sure what that left over nitrate ion does? Does it just sit there in aquaeous in water? or does it react to give oxygen and nitrogen dioxide or perhaps nitric acid?
Sorry for lack of sub/superscripts.
Cheers,
KJ
