:-\I know that MgCl2 is delinquescent,i.e. it absorbs water from the air .So why can't we use a coating of MgCl2 on iron objects to prevent rusting,as water is essential for it?Is there something wrong here? Or is this method already in use?

It will not work.

MgCl2 is highly hygroscopic which means that it will soon get wet - and dissociated. That will speed up the corrosion instead of slowing it.
