Preparation of Honeybee pheremone
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:56:46 PM »
Hi everyone, New to this forum!

I'm trying to work out a reaction break down that I recently have done. I am a 1st year Biochemist, so hopefully someone can *delete me*

I am reacting 3-methylbutan-1-ol with acetic anhydride to make 3-methyl-1-butyl ethanoate. (The pheromone). Anyone any ideas one what the other products are or an equation for this?

Many thanks :)

My proposed reaction is:

(CH3)2CHCH2CH2OH + CH3COOCOCH3 = Ester + CH3COO-

your equation is correct, assuming the extra O in acetic anhydride is a type-o.
