Environmental Conditions needed for Oxidation to Occur?
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:20:07 PM »
Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew of the enviromental conditions needed for oxidation to occur? I mean generally...do there need to be high temperatures? Must there be an excess in one of the reagents?

If you have answers to ethanal to ethanol specifically, that would be great, thank you :)

Oxidation of Ethanol to Ethanal?
« Reply #1 on: February 09, 2011, 08:22:10 PM »
Hi guys,

I need to know the reaction mechanism involved with oxidation from ethanol to ethanal. Does anyone know the steps on how to get from ethanol to ethanol?

I know the reaction is something along the lines of:
3CH3CH2OH + CR2O7 + BH --> 3CH3CHO + 2CR3 + 7H20

But I need to know what's happening step by step. I've searched everyone on the internet and I cant find anything!

Not only that, I need to know the curly arrows involved too!

If you have anything on it that would be sooo great :)

Ethanol would be oxidized to ethanal, ethanal could be reduced to form ethanol.  Maybe you just wrote em backwards?

That is a very broad question.   Oxidation can be instantaneou with some materials--such as deflegration reactions like adding organic compounds to chlorine gas.  Some oxidation reactions are slow, like iron rusting out in the open.

This is one of my most favorite sites for chem help--they have fantastic descriptions.
