Hi people,

I was wondering if you could help me figure out the name of a specific glass apparatus that I saw in the lab but forgot its name.

It is a glass tube slightly similar to a test tube, but with thick walls and a twist-on cover. It is used in hot oil baths and provides an environment for reflux to take place. The solvent can evaporate, but will condense on the sides (as the entire tube is sealed) and flow back down to the reaction.

Could anybody find out the name for this glass apparatus? I have absolutely no idea what it's called, and Google searches have failed me

Sorry, I forgot to state that it isn't a condenser. Sorry It's just a single tube, no wires, ice or anything

Basically a test tube with a screw-on cap for heating mixtures at high temperatures.

Sounds like a Schlenk tube to me.

As always, care should be taken when heating a sealed flask since there will be a buildup of pressure.  It is always a good idea to do this behind a blast shield.

I don't think they have a standard name.  We have a couple of those exactly as you described that Chemglass sells just as pressure vessels.  You can have some thick walled Schlenk type flasks as well as the previous poster linked (though not all Schlenk vessels can run under pressure).

The idea is to run reactions at a temperature higher than the reflux temperature of the solvent or you are using some component in the reaction that is volatile at the reaction temperature (say methanolic HCl/ammonia).
