What is the application of Physical Chemistry?
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:39:10 AM »
Hi, I am majoring in Physical Chemistry in one of the University of California. I am wondering what I can do with the degree after I graduate. I do want to do research, but I have no idea which field I can go to. I want to start doing research now, and still figuring out which field I like.
Does anyone know how and where to find information about physical chemistry online? Like the jobs, research, etc.?

Thank you.

have you ever attended a conference? Your university should at the very least have informed you of any that are in the area. This can give you a good overview of what is possible in the field.

Other than that you have to make the decision yourself as to what degree of fundamentalism you want in your research. Very basic science, or more applied, or even commercial as in making consumer products.

Physical Chemistry is a very wide field, with applications including (but not limited to!) catalysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, electrochemistry, up to even the more physical aspects in x-ray studies.

Thank you.

I'm assuming that you're undergraduate because in first or second year because a third year student or postgraduate knows at least what each branch of chemistry exposes you to. I've never heard anyone majoring in physical chemistry or inorganic  chemistry etc but in chemistry. Physical chemists have lots of jobs...google it.

UCSD offers specialized majors like that.

You can major in Chemical Physics, Molecular Synthesis, Biochemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry and so on...
