Sulfates with sulfuric acid?
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:15:21 PM »
Why do we not test sulfates with sulfuric acid? Is it because sulfates are the salts of sulfuric acid?

Because you don't get a visible change.
If you add HCl, you won't get a visible change either.

If you have Na2SO4 and you add CaCl2, you get the insoluble CaSO4.
You can also use BaCl2

As a cheap, soluble salt of barium, barium chloride finds wide application in the laboratory. It is commonly used as a test for sulfate ion
