Need urgent help with these acid base reactions please...
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:00:24 PM »
Okay if silicon dioxide reacts with water it yields H2SiO3, correct?
So if this reacts with HCl, what would the outcome be? Will it precipitate?
If the H2SiO3 reacts with NaOH, what would the out come be? Is this a precipitate?
Please help. This is due tomorrow and I don't know how to do this I have been trying for so long. Thank you.

There is no Reaktion between SiO2 + H2O.

What is possible is to react quarz with sodiumhydroxide.

SiO2 + 4NaOH => Na4SiO4 + 2 H2O

This can react with HCl to a polymer

First step

2 SiO44- + 2  HCl => Si2O76- + 2 Cl- +  H2O

2 Si2O76- + 2 HCl => H2O + Si4O1310- + 2 Cl- .>   SiO2 in fürther reaction

alright but why doesn't hydrous silicon hydroxide (SiO2 nH2O) react with anything? What is on the compound that doesn't allow it to react?

Do you mean why doesn't silicon dioxide react with water? Because it doesn't. Why does diamond not react with water?

That doesn't seem like a fair answer Rabolisk, to someone without much understanding chemistry, it seems fair to ask, what makes a certain compound reactive and another unreactive?

I am only asking because in this lab we added NaOH and HCl to hydrous silicon hydroxide (SiO2 nH2O). It didn't react with anything. I need to know the reasoning behind this for these discussion questions. I can't think of why...

Go look up the bond strength of Si-O and compare it to other covalent bonds.
