How to figure out whether it's KNO3 or KNO2?
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:12:17 PM »
Ok, I have post-lab questions that I must complete. All are fine except this one. The question asks " Describe how you would determine which compound is present in a container labelled KNO3, KNO2 or Ba(NO3)2."
My first step would be to add inxs H2SO4 to a sample, as if it was barium it would produce a insoluble precipitate.
However I don't believe you can use Sulfuric acid to differentiate between KNO3 or KNO2? (however in the experiment, Sodium Nitrate did not react while Sodium Nitrite evolved a thick brown gas). I can't seem to find anything to tell between them, any help/hints/tips would be greatly appreciated!!

You have seen the difference, why don't you use what you have seen?
