Iodination of Salicylamide
«

Hi
Can someone explain me the purpose of adding hypochlorite or bleach (NaOCl) in iodination of salicylamide? Also what is the purpose of acidifying the solution with HCl in before vacuum filtration?
The procedure is described here:
https://www.abu.nb.ca/faculty/MSchriver/lectures/CH1023W09/Exp17greeneasstd.pdf
Please help
