calculate standard potential
« on: March 25, 2011, 06:56:51 PM »
Calculate the standard potential for the process MnO2 / Mn+2

Eº (MnO4- / Mn+2) = 1.51 V
Eº (MnO4- / MnO2) = 1.70 V

(All reactions occur at low pH)

ATTEMPT: Combine the equations

MnO2 + 2 H2O :rarrow: MnO4- + 4 H+ + 3 e-
MnO4- + 8 H+ + 5 e- :rarrow: Mn+2 + 4 H2O
---------------------------------------------------
MnO2 + 4 H+ + 2 e- :rarrow: Mn+2 + 2 H2O

Is the species HMnO4 involved in the process? If so, where does it appear?

Of the MnO2/Mn2+ reduction? No.

Thanks. I must've got confused because of the low pH.
