Organic Chemistry Nomenclature
« on: April 02, 2011, 02:44:32 AM »
Hi. I just have two questions:

1. For the first diagram, I am having issues trying to figure out whether it is butyne or ethyne. Since there is no "zig-zag" in the image, it is making it rather ambiguous and also, the double bond only partially covers the line so I am torn between these two choices. I chose butyne because the the bonding seemed to be depicted in the middle so between the second and third carbon but I wanted a second opinion on this.

2. For the second diagram, since there are three methyl groups branched out of the methane, is this considered three ethanes or three methanes branched out of a methane?

1. Butine CH3-C=C-CH3

2. Isopropyl-cyclopentane or 1,1-Dimethyl-eth -1-yl-cyclopentane

1. But-2-yne

Though 'butyne' is correct it does not specify between but-1-yne (HC≡C-CH2-CH3) and but-2-yne (H3C-C≡C-CH3).
I'm still learning - always check my work/answer.

2. Isopropyl-cyclopentane

No, tert-butylcyclopentane, there is no isopropyl group there.
