aldehyde + I2 ?
« on: April 08, 2011, 04:40:37 PM »
Hi all,

i was wondering if an aldehyde could react with iodine in DCM (or THF)?  i've planned to do a reaction using only iodine and my substrate (tin/halogen exchange) in DCM, but i have an aldehyde on it

do any of you know if it could react (like oxidation to the corresponding acid?)

thanks

If its enolizable, you may run the risk of alpha-iodination. In general, aldehydes are easily oxidized; I would be a little leery about throwing iodine at one. Diol protection isn't that hard.
Individual results may vary
