Hi,

I was just given a prescription to get a cream made for my hands because I have a tendency to get bad eczema on my skin. The formula the doctor wrote is: Sodium Chloride (NaCL) 3 grams, Eucerin 97 grams and Distilled Water 10 c.c. (I assume this means 10 cups. She wrote it like it was 10 to the power of c.c).  Today I'm going to a pharmacy to get it made, but in the future, I'd like to make it myself to save money. Where would I get these ingredients, and how would I make distilled water? And is NaCL just table salt?

This may or may not be 'amateur drug synthesis'...but I'm gonna say a couple things.

Distilled water (for drinking) is available at any grocery store.

Sodium chloride is the salt part of table salt, but if you're using it in a reaction BEWARE of the difference between pure sodium chloride and the table salt you buy (I'm mostly thinking about iodization)

Eucerin is a pharmaceutical itself...if you need a perscription for this medicine, maybe you'll probably need a prescription for Eucirin???

There's a tendency nowadays to use KCl instead of NaCl as a table salt substitute. I believe this is the stuff you get from supermarkets, although obviously it depends on the brand.

I believe it's mainly for health reasons (so as not to have high Na in the blood) but I'm not sure and I'm afraid I lack the time to research it. If you're worried, google it

Gonna be some thick stuff... 100grams of solids with 10mL of water.  Can't imagine why they would sell the stuff dry anyhow; wouldn't it be easier just to sell it with the water and salt in there already? But apparently Eucerin is a powder that was orignally patented in 1900.

Personally, I use Protopic with my eczema.... though it was just listed as possibly cancerous it works like gangbusters.
