Structure of IF6-?
« on: June 05, 2011, 04:14:59 PM »
I have this weird problem that goes:

"Structural analysis has proven that IF6- is not octahedral. Account for this result"

I'm kind of lost. If it's not octahedral, what then?

EDIT: Okay, so it has a lonepair, on top of the octahedral configuration with fluoride. So it's gotta be some distorted version of the octahedral, because the lone pair is budging around here and there?

Read under "Structure"

In the IF6- ion, the negative charge is borne by the Iodine atom. Since the electronic configuration of I- is the same as that of Xe, I think their structures will similar.
