Meaning of Equivalent
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:02:21 AM »
new to the whole O chem thing. I was wondering if anyone could explain what equivalent means in o chem? got confused.
for example some compound X was used in the following way: 12g, .235 mmole, 2 equiv.
I know that the reaction used 12 g which is .235 mmole of Compound x, but what does 2 equiv mean?

thanks

Double the number of moles of compound x= 2 (mole) equivalents.

Equivalents is a ratio for an amount of one compound relative to another in mol/mmol/etc. So 2 eq means twice as much as the other compound, if you has .235 mmol of compound X you'd have about .118 mol of the other compound.
