Semi-structural formulae confusion
«

Hey everyone. I was wondering why the semi structural formulae of 2 methly pentan-1-ol is CH3CH2CH2CH(CH3)CH2OH and not CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH2OH.
-How do you know which end to start from when your counting the carbons in these problems?

You have to find the longest chain, then the number 1 is the C-atom which carries the hetero atom, here the OH- group. The other law is if no hetero atoms in the molecule to have the numbers to small as possible.
