Electron Population and pi Orbitals
« on: June 25, 2011, 04:06:14 PM »
I'm having trouble with my homework question...I'm not sure how to start because I'm confused about what it's asking for in regards to electron population.

For a hemin that contains 26 electrons, indicate the electron population of the filled or
partly filled pi orbitals for the ground state of the molecule (each orbital, degenerate or
not, can hold two electrons per Pauli principle).

you will need an idea of what a hemin is first, so you know what kind of orbitals will be available.
I am confused though, as hemin (iron porphyrin) has lots more than 26 electrons. Maybe they only mean a small portion of it?
