HI, I tried to solve the problem by myself by I have no clue. I have also typed what I thought. Can anyone help me and give some comment?
1. If a distillation is started without a Boileezer in the distillation flask, the boiling chip should never be added to the hot liquid. Explain.
2. In a beginning organic chemisty laboratory in Denver, Colorado (elevation 5,280ft) two students distill a pure organic liquid, each student taking his sample from teh same bottle. One student reports a boiling point 10C below that recorded in the chemistry handbook; the other reports a boiling point 10C above that in the handbook. One student has reported a proper boiling point;the other has not only reported an improper boiling point but also has probably made a common experimental error. Which student has reported the right boiling point? Why? Which student has reported the wrong boiling point? What was his experimental error?
3. The efficiency of any column packing material can be expressed in terms of its H.E.T.P. (height of an equivalent theoretical plate) rating, where H.E.T.P. can be defined as that length of column packing corresponding to one theoretical plate. Coloumn packings are known with H.E.T.P.'s of less than 1 cm; simple packings such as that employed in this experiement may have H.E.T.P. of 10cm or more. Assume that your packing has an H.E.T.P. of 4 cm and calculate the totoal number of theoretical plates in your factional idstillation assembly . Some students may turn in answeers that will be one theoretical plate low. What is the probable source of theire error?
my thought, please comment and guide me to the answers.
1. the hot liquid will cause the Boileezer expand and damage the frationating column.
2. 5,280ft is at low attitude. There the boiling point will increase accordingly. The student reported a 10C above Chemistry handbook. (But I donno what was the experiemental error of the other student)
3. measured 18cm. (donno how to do this problem)
