Decomposition problem
« on: September 03, 2011, 06:19:21 PM »
Decomposition of 36.54 grams of a pure solid compound produces 4.06 g of nitrogen gas, 10.44 grams of water and a solid metal oxide. The metal oxide is found to contain 68.42% chromium.

A) They want me to find the simplest formula for the metal oxide. I assumed it was Cr2O3. Correct?
 B) What's the oxidation number of the chromium in the oxide. This is easy, it's III correct?
 C) How many moles of each element are present in the unkown compound? This one I was a little confused about. I know there are 4.06g of N2 10.44g of H2O and 22.04g of the metal oxide (Cr2O3). Do I just find the moles of the N2, H2O, and Cr2O3?
 D) What's the simplest formula for the unknown compound? I was a bit confused here. Since it's a solid compound and decomposition it would have to be a single compound that contains chromium, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen...correct?

A and B correct, seems like you are on the right track with C and D - just do what you think you should do.
