Calculating heat production
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:42:29 AM »
How can I calculate the heat production of a chemical reaction with unknown specific heat capacity of the reactants?

Q = m * C * (T2-T1)

C is the specific heat capacity and these are not to be found in any literature.

Thanks in advance,

Deedee

In general - you can't. However, sometimes some approximations are possible.

For example if you work with not too concentrated water solutions, assuming just water heat capacity often gives reasonably accurate results.
