Decomposition of H2O2
«

I was trying to perform the Elephant's Toothpaste reaction (decomposition of H2O2 with KI). I added a scoop of KI to the H2O2 and it instantly turned red. I didn't notice any decomposition giving off O2, and I'm in a school lab where some of the chemicals are dated. Should I be worried about anything? Could someone help me figure out why the H2O2 turned red?

Red sounds like elemental iodine.

No, it wasn't 30%. It was a jug of 3%, but I would guess that the bottle is over 5 years old, at least.
