proper lab procedures
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:52:26 PM »
Hi, can anyone recommend a guide or book that is pretty much comprehensive in dealing with proper lab procedures? In my chem class, we did not go over this and I am having trouble with it now.

For example, I did not know that when heating a liquid in a test tube, i must tilt the beaker then heat the liquid near the surface to eliminate gas bubbles from exploding out the bottom to the top. While this one is logical, some are not and I am wondering if you guys have any guides to this.

Thank you.

Hmmm ... for starters, look at the first pages of your lab manual, it should have some general lab safety tips.  IIRC, your lab class may have had you sign a disclaimer, either before you entered the lab, or before you started, usually just after they showed you where the fire extinguishers were.  Something very similar also happens your first day in a commercial laboratory. That document also lists useful tips for you to remember, and also attests that you've at least been told, even if you don't remember.  Even general chemistry textbooks often have something in the very beginning regarding lab safety.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
