Diacyl Peroxides

Hi, I'm new here so please be nice :)

I'm interested in preparing a diacyl peroxide (R-C=OO-OO=C-R) as a radical precursor but no-one in my group has done this before. Has anyone here prepared a peroxide before? I would expect them to be quite unstable, shock sensitive and possibly explosive.

I am wondering exactly how unstable these diacyl peroxides really are - a few of the papers say they actually recrystallise and/or column them. I would be a little wary columning a peroxide (an exploding column would be a scary thing). That said, I would also be a little wary heating them up for a recryst - anyone here had any experience?

No need to make one when you can buy it: check out benzoyl peroxide. Probably not worth your time and the danger involved making them anyway. If you're interested in other radical precursors, I'd look at AIBN or APS.

I'm actually making a model compound for some radical studies. Need to generate a specific radical (I have already done it using other methods but they are all complicated by other radicals formed in the generation of my desired radical).

So, unfortunately this one either has to be made or abandoned!
