Organolithium compound used to make Gilman Reagent
« on: December 10, 2011, 07:13:00 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Here is a question in OWL that I'm working on:

Lithium diorganocopper (Gilman) reagents are prepared by treatment of an organolithium compound with copper(I) iodide. Decide what lithium diorganocopper (Gilman) reagent is needed to convert 1-bromopropane into 3-methylhexane. Draw the structure of the organolithium compound that is used to prepare this Gilman reagent in the box below.

Attached is my Gilman reagent used with 1-bromopropane to make 3-methylhexane. How do generate the organolithium that this Gilman reagent would be made from? If I understand correctly, organolithium compounds are prepared from halides. So would my compound be my Gilman reagent but with the CuLi coming from I?

Thank you,
Michelle

I think the answer 4 will walk you through the steps. Answers 2 and 3 contain additional thoughts on the Gilman reaction.

Hi All,

I figured out that what I was missing was the Lithium component to my reagent before it becomes a Gilman. So, in my drawing, just replace the I with Li and that is the correct answer.
