Mixing Chlorine Bleach and Chlorine-Free Bleach
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:29:54 PM »
Hello, this is my first post so please forgive any transgressions I may make.

I decided to bleach my white laundry today, and filled the bleach repository of my washing machine to about half full with Clorox Regular Bleach. Then I had the idea to mix in some Seventh Generation Chlorine-Free Bleach. This produced a chemical reaction.

I observed bubbling and a hissing sounds coming from the mixture, occuring for 5-10 seconds, and, I assume, gas being released, as the liquid level in the repository dropped after the 5-10 seconds had passed. After I noticed the level drop, I turned on the fan in the laundry room, turned on the washer, and left immediately, for fear of inhaling toxic gases.

I have four questions:

1. What, chemically was occurring when I mixed the two forms of bleach?
2. What do you predict the effects will be on my clothing? (extra-whitened, ruined, etc)
3. Was a toxic gas released?
4. Is there any reason I should not do this in the future, or not wear the clothes that I washed with this mixture?

Thanks,
Jon

Rinse them good, dry them as usual, and wear them, they should be all right.  You may have simply released oxygen gas from the chlorine-free bleach, or you may have released chlorine gas.  Don't do this any more.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
