Halohydrin
« on: January 03, 2012, 10:40:02 PM »
Hello,

This problem does not make sense to me using a halohydrin approach, so what do I do? "Provide the reagent(s) necessary to transform 4-dimethyl-2-pertene into 1-chloro-4-dimethyl-2-pentanol." Anti-Markovnikov and Markovnikov hydrations do not put the hydroxyl in the correct place and how do you do an anti-Markovnikov with Chlorine?

Since the name already contains one error, I don't know whether this problem is more difficult than normal because the product may also have been incorrectly named. The starting material could have been named 4,4-dimethyl-2-pentene but then again, it may have been named 4,4-dimethylpent-1-ene. I suspect it is the latter.
