Questions regarding chemistry and humor
« on: October 24, 2005, 11:53:15 AM »
Hello to all,
I not quiet into chemistry myself, but I'm looking for a presant for someone who is.

I've found a site that sells T-shirts and such with "Chemistry Humor" on them.
As I have virtually no clue what these desings mean, so I am at loss to judge if they are funny - I was hoping you guys could help me here...

The site is called MolecularShirts.com, and the designs I was looking at are here ("molecular metaphors").

Could anyone tell me if they get the "joke"? I'd hate to buy my friend something in bad taste, and could really use an educated opinion.

Thank you in advance!

Sam

Hi,
I had a quick look- is your friend an organic chemist?
Only an organic chemist would really appreciate these I think.

Theye are designed by playing on the naming system of organic molecules so are all equally funny.
Hope that helps!

First of all, thanks!
I believe that my friend is an organic chemist (he deals with proteins, amino-acids and such).

You said that the designs are all equally funny, how funny would you say they are in general?

Any thoughts as to if this would make a good gift?

Proteins, aminos, and the such are definately organic chemistry. If that isn't then my whole definatin of organic chem has been turned upside down. Especially because I just had a refresher unit of it in chem.

Proteins, aminos, and the such are definately organic chemistry.

Sounds more chemical biology than organic chemistry. Although, there is huge overlap in the fields.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

Don't confuse an organic chemist for a chemical biologist or vice versa.  I think that both parties would be insulted.

I never knew there was much of a difference between the two.  :-\

Sorry if I offended anyone. Like Mitch said though they overlap.

Heh, they definitely do overlap, but for whatever irrational reason they never like to be confused with the other.

at least nobody confuses the chemist for the chemical engineer and vice versa
