Magnetic water-softeners

I have seen devices advertised that claim to prevent limescale by passing hard water through a magnetic field. I cannot see how such a thing could possibly work. Can anyone enlighten me?

General concensus seems to be is that it can not work.

Water Imp [electro magnetic] is supposed to have had trials done by Bath University but they give no  verifiable references.

Also they do not give a verifiable postal address where one can contact them, which is rather odd.

Have asked the labs at Severn Trent their opinions on these type of device and they seemed to think that they are dubious.

Does anyone know of any trials conducted at Bath ?

Ooops !!
Seems as there are authentic verifiable trials done by a South African University.

Google search --    Water SA  >  Archives  >  2003  >  Issue 3

This has convinced me that there is an effect on the crystallisatin of Calcium Carbonate  also verified by

http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/sims/water/magnets.htm

They show that the partical size is changed,
