In this case it won't make a difference, however, if it was was an -ol, -al, -ene, -yne (so forth) for example you'd have to consider which side to begin from. After you've numbered it begin adding your substituents.

Yeah the chain is heptane not hexane. OP you could have determined that by realizing that two methyl groups on the 6th carbon of hexane is actually increasing the chain by one. Thus it's actually heptane with 3 methyl groups and an ethyl group attached.
